Cyber-Scam Exploiting Hurricane Harvey to Solicit Money & Malware.
As you’re aware, Hurricane Harvey tore through parts of Texas during the weekend, leaving behind a trail of destruction and flooding. While the devastation and number of people affected, including those that lost their lives, continues to rise, so does the number of cyber-predators’ who are ready to exploit this disaster to trick people into clicking dangerous links and soliciting [false] charitable giving for victims.
Some things to watch for:
- Facebook pages dedicated to victim relief with links to scam websites.
- Tweets with links to charitable websites soliciting donations, but containing links to scam sites or links that lead to a malware infection.
- Phishing emails asking for donations to #HurricaneHarvey Relief Fund.
Be leery of anything online covering the Hurricane Harvey disaster in the following weeks. If you want to donate, go directly to the charity’s website, do not click on links in emails or text messages. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us or give us a call.
